Comfort and durability in social housing:
The OMHQ chooses the proven performance of Thermo 2000 and DoubleMax
As a key player in Québec’s social housing landscape, the Office municipal d'habitation de Québec (OMHQ) has recently commissioned Thermo 2000 to modernize the hot-water production system in one of its buildings. By installing 10 DoubleMax units, the OMHQ has selected an innovative, high-performance solution that provides optimal comfort for residents, enhances safety, and significantly lowers maintenance costs. Discover how this strategic choice aligns perfectly with the OMHQ’s vision for agility, innovation, and improved living conditions.
A major shift for the OMHQ:
Before the DoubleMax retrofit, the building’s domestic hot water came from three 1,320-US-gallon storage tanks. That setup had clear drawbacks. Keeping large volumes of water on standby made the system more prone to corrosion, meaning that a single tank failure could knock out hot water for every resident. Sediment build-up drove maintenance bills higher and threatened overall water quality.
Thermo 2000’s DoubleMax uses an instantaneous, indirect-heating approach to produce domestic hot water. Instead of storing water, it relies on a double-wall copper heat exchanger. Potable water is heated on demand as it flows through a copper coil that is immersed in a heat-transfer fluid heated by an external energy source. In this case, the coil is heated by Thermo 2000’s Voltmax electric boilers.
Running without a storage tank eliminates problems tied to stagnant water: it sharply reduces sediment build-up, corrosion, and bacterial growth, such as legionella. The coil’s dual wall adds another safety layer by preventing any cross-contamination. Instantaneous heating, paired with copper’s superior thermal conductivity, means hot water arrives fast and effectively, exactly when it’s needed. The design keeps maintenance to a minimum and ensures exceptional durability.
Why Thermo 2000 DoubleMax : a choice in line with the OMHQ values
The OMHQ’s move to Thermo 2000 and its DoubleMax solution was strategic. Charged with providing suitable, integrated housing through agile, forward-thinking practices, the organization saw DoubleMax as the perfect fit for its needs and objectives.
While Thermo 2000’s premium equipment can mean a higher upfront investment, the long-term gains that DoubleMax delivers are unprecedented for an organization like the OMHQ:
–
Comfort and quality for residents: DoubleMax delivers instantaneous, superior-quality hot water, significantly boosting tenants’ day-to-day comfort.
–
Enhanced safety and reliability: A dual-wall coil eliminates contamination risks, ensuring clean water. Ten compact units—rather than three massive tanks—provide redundancy, so service continues even when one unit is undergoing maintenance.
–
Lower maintenance costs: The absence of stagnant water, copper’s corrosion resistance, and a design that does not require a sacrificial anode minimize maintenance and failure risks, leading to substantial long-term savings.
–
Durability and longevity: DoubleMax’s long service life supports the OMHQ’s commitment to sustainable development and responsible management of its housing assets.
–
Innovation and electrification: In addition to the DoubleMax units, the OMHQ installed two Thermo 2000 Voltmax electric boilers. This is proof of the organization’s commitment to adopting greener energy solutions and accelerating building electrification in line with current environmental priorities.
Investing in Thermo 2000’s DoubleMax system was a smart move for the OMHQ. It lets the housing office deliver unmatched comfort to residents while managing its infrastructure efficiently and sustainably. Thanks to its reliability, safety and lower maintenance costs, DoubleMax aligns with the OMHQ’s vision and mission.
A winning partnership for social housing
The case study of Thermo 2000’s DoubleMax installation at the OMHQ demonstrates how innovative solutions can tackle the specific challenges of social housing. By prioritizing quality, durability, and safety, the OMHQ provides optimal comfort for residents while controlling long-term operating costs. This valuable partnership between a high-performance heating leader and a dedicated social housing organization serves as an inspiring example of a strategy focused on innovation and citizens’ well-being.
